The OfficeStar Story

Beginnings

OfficeStar was founded in 2002 in Watsonville, CA, by long-time friends Paul Farmer, Larritha Rico and Mark Babcock. While the company started with a small office with a single classroom, OfficeStar has grown rapidly and acquired several competitors including The Fourth R (2003), New Horizons (2005), and the Spot (2007).  OfficeStar now operates the largest private training facilities on the Central Coast, serving small and large companies, government organizations, non-profits, vocational rehab and career retraining students, and the general public.

OfficeStar’s Community Involvement

OfficeStar is committed to community involvement.  OfficeStar’s President, Paul Farmer, is a Vice Chair with the Board of the Salinas Chamber of Commerce.  He was the President of the Salinas Jaycees (Junior Chamber) in 2008, and served as the Statewide President of the Jaycees in 2010.  OfficeStar has supported many local charities including the Children’s Shopping Tour, Relay for Life, and countless others.  In 2009, Paul founded “Thrill the World – Salinas,” part of a worldwide, synchronized dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, with proceeds benefiting charity.

OfficeStar’s Accomplishments

OfficeStar was recognized as the Best Woman-owned Business in Monterey County in the 2008 Salute to Small Business.  This award was given to OfficeStar in commemoration of our rapid, but stable growth, the outstanding service provided to customers, and the volunteer contributions we’ve made to the community. 

In 2011, OfficeStar revisited its mission, and embarked on a rebranding campaign with a new logo and a completely revamped website.  The company changed its name from “OfficeStar Computer Training Centers” to simply “OfficeStar Training,” to reflect its growing breadth of training beyond computer software instruction.  We also offer career retraining in IT careers, Medical Assisting, Project Management, and more.

OfficeStar’s Customers

Last year, we trained over 3,000 people in various software applications and business skills. We provide open and dedicated training for all types of organizations in our area - from large companies like Dole, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, and Fresh Express, to government entities like the Superior Court, County of Monterey, and City of Santa Cruz. We also work with vocational rehab counselors, the Dept of Rehab, EDD and the Workforce Investment Board.

Our team works tirelessly to provide training that not only gives people skills to be successful, but also gives them the confidence to move their lives forward. We are very proud of our accomplishments--from the success of the person who takes a Level 1 Excel class, to the laid-off Blockbuster employee who dreams of becoming a PC repair technician.
